NORM YIP - FINE ART PHOTOGRAPHY

Norm Yip was born and raised in Canada by Chinese parents. He received his B. of Arts degree (cum laude) in 1984 at the University of Saskatchewan and his B. of Architecture degree in 1989 at the University of Toronto.

In 1994, he moved to Hong Kong where he worked as a project architect for Wong & Tai Associates Ltd and RTKL International Ltd before pursuing his interest in art and photography. In 1999, he co-founded the organization art collective Meli-Melo Artists Alliance (MMAA), to which he curated numerous art exhibitions with artists from Canada, Thailand and Hong Kong.

Eventually in 2001, he formed Norm Yip Photography and set up Studio 8 -- a semi-public photographic and art space located in the heart of Sheung Wan -- where he hosted private and selected exhibitions. Since then, he has exhibited in all three mediums of photography, acrylic painting and graphite.

As a photographer, Norm's work has appeared in HK Magazine, WHERE, Global Investor and American Express' Centurion magazine. Celebrities he has photographed include Zhang Yimou, Jennifer Lopez, Ricky Martin, Destiny's Child and Korean pop-star Rain.

To many, Norm is recognized for his fine art photographs of beautiful and sensuous Asian males. His work has been featured in 2Blue and Dreamboys 2, both special edition of Blue magazine, known for it’s excellence in fine art male photography. In 2005, Norm self-published “The Asian Male - 1.AM” – a photography book featuring nude and semi-nude images of Asian men that he photographed over a period of five years from 2000-2005.

The exhibition ‘Skin Deep’ is his first exhibition featuring new images of the male nude since the release of his photography book.

Forthcoming projects include the second edition to the ‘Asian Male’ series (to be published January 2007) and a photography book on China gymnasts (to be published August 2007).
